Without knowing Czech and by means of collaboration with native speakers, including the author, David Young began translating Miroslav Holub in 1981, and became the poet’s American translator until Holub’s death in 1998. A close friendship developed, and as Holub’s English improved, poet and translator worked productively together on a number of volumes.

Miroslav Holub, Poems Before and After

(Oberlin College Press, 1982)
